Celebrating Me: Days 23-26

Thursday, June 23, 2011

Today I began feeling better than I had felt previously, but it was such a full day that I almost forgot to celebrate myself. I taught a training class that night and one of the participants asked me if she could buy me something from the 7-11 during the break. Normally I don’t take advantage of nice people when they offer to buy me stuff (unless I’m on a date) but I decided to consider it a birthday present. Since I was thoroughly parched I simply asked for a bottle of water. It was VERY much appreciated πŸ™‚

After a very long week, I ordered myself a pizza from Domino’s – which has become my favorite since they changed their recipe – and had a good, relaxing night in.

After a super awesome 6 mile run, I went to Tucano’s for my first time for lunch. My mom, stepdad, and “baby” sister took me. At Tucano’s you can sign up to receive a free meal during your birthday month. I can’t even describe how much fun this place is. You don’t order anything from a menu except your drink. Then you go to the salad bar and load up on whatever you want, but you shouldn’t load up too much, otherwise you’ll be too full for the best, which is yet to come. As you’re eating, servers come around with various kinds, cuts and flavors of meats. You pick what you want and they put it on your plate. They do this in a circuit, so if you feel like that bacon-wrapped turkey was simply amazing and you’ve got to have more, just wait!

This is the tambourine they gave me during my chair dance. The waitress very kindly let us pose with it.

They’ll be bringing more around. The sweet and spicy chicken was one of my favorites, as was the grilled pineapple (I know, pineapple is not a meat. But still). Toward the end of the meal, some of the waitresses and waiters came out clapping their hands and banging drums. They came to my table, asked me to stand on my chair, and handed me a tambourine. Then they did a little birthday chant as I shook the tambourine while trying not to fall off the chair. It was really fun! But we didn’t think until later that it could have been digitally captured in either picture or video form. Sad not to have that, but Stacey and I got some pictures after.

I had read on Kim & Jason’s blog about rules that don’t apply and Jason posed the question “Will you notice any [rules that don’t apply] today in your life?” After buying some essentials for my upcoming half marathon, I found myself at Sam’s Club looking at surprisingly cute shoes. My instinct told me this:

“You need some black ones because your last pair of black flats broke. You don’t need any that are in the brown or white family because you already have some. Black, brown, white. All the shoe colors you need.”

I told my instinct this: “Says who?”

I did end up buying the black ones because I really did need them. But I also bought some purple ones! Why? Why not? Take THAT, Adultitis!

Quite smashing, aren't they?

Celebrating Me: Days 17-22

Oquirrh Mountain Temple (c)2009 Michael Provard

Today I left work a half hour early. I spread a blanket out on a field of grass and read a book. Then I took a nap.

Saturday, June 18, 2011

This morning I needed to run 5 miles for my half marathon training, but the women from church organized a 5k. So I woke up early and ran 2 miles before the 5k, then ran the 5k. There were about 30 of us and I came in 2nd! Later in the day I went to the Oquirrh Mountain Temple. That night I went with one of my old roommates to see the musical “Civil War.” That was a dual birthday celebration because her birthday was last week.

Sunday, June 19, 2011

Today at church they handed out cupcakes for everyone who had a birthday in June. So sweet!

Mmm! Pie!

Monday, June 20, 2011

Today I ate dessert first during lunch AND dinner!

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

Tonight I got myself a Reese’s Peanut Butter Shake.

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Today I was supposed to have lunch with a friend I haven’t seen in a while, but she over-scheduled herself 😦 On top of that, I’m coming down with a cold so I haven’t really felt much like figuring out some way to celebrate, especially since I’ve been working all day and still have to work tonight. However, my BFF found a super sweet deal on airline tickets so I booked my flight for California for October when her firstborn get baptized and her almost-born gets blessed! Can’t wait for that!

Celebrating Me: Days 14-16

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

Tonight I ate all the chocolate in my candy jar while diving into season 2 of “The Big Bang Theory.”

The Looking Glass Wars

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

This evening 2 of my sisters took me to Olive Garden for dinner. They told the waiter it was my birthday, but Olive Garden is cheap – not due to their food prices, but due to their lack of a celebratory flare. So no free dessert and loud annoying song. But the waiter did try to be a bit creative. He brought me a plate filled with Andes mints. The mint in the very center had a candle stuck into it. I wish I took a picture! The best part? I tried unsuccessfully to blow the candle out. So the waiter teased me that it was a trick candle. I finally huffed and puffed and blew that candle out, spraying wax all over as I did so. Good times! Thanks Stace and Les!

Thursday, June 16, 2011

After work I decided that to celebrate today I would buy a new book and read it at the park. And why not get some ice cream on the way? I bought “The Looking Glass Wars” trilogy at the suggestion of my dear old friend Ike, then got a shake at Maggie Moo’s. Well after I went to Barnes and Noble, I never made it to the park, due to an unexpected communication with a new friend of mine that led me instead to meet up with him at yet another Barnes and Noble – where I bought Kristin Chenoweth’s autobiography – and a Cold Stone Creamery. Can’t have too much ice cream, right?

Then a surprise party showed up in my inbox. Kim & Jason Kotecki are launching an online membership of the Escape Plan, and that extremely generous pair offered it to me free of charge! Love it! Love them! Happy Birthday to me!

Celebrating Me: Days 10 – 13

Friday, June 10, 2011

This evening I went to a driving range to attempt to hit golf balls. My attempts proved successful in that I hit the balls. I may have only sent some far enough to be considered a “good shot”, but my friend who went with me said my form kept improving. I had a lot of fun! Then I had dinner at Cafe Rio, then to see the new Spielberg movie “Super 8.” I didn’t know anything about the movie before I saw it, and it was great going into a show having no preconceived notions and really enjoying it! My favorite line from the movie: “Drugs are SO bad!” (You kinda have to hear the line in context to understand why it’s my favorite.)

Saturday, June 11, 2011

This evening I went to a karaoke party. Most people make it a point to sing poorly when they do karaoke. Not me. Just can’t do it. So I brought along my “Wicked” karaoke cd and rocked my friends’ socks on “The Wizard and I.” Ah, I love to sing!

Sunday, June 12, 2011

This evening I had my second birthday dinner at my mom’s house. We had spaghetti and garlic bread and my mom did a great job on my al dente noodles – usually she cooks the noodles too long for my liking. We also watched “Philadelphia Story” together.

Monday, June 13, 2011

Today I took a short nap after work, then I set on building a puzzle that my BFF Dawn got me for my birthday. It’s a 3D model of the Empire State Building! She also got me the Statue of Liberty, but I haven’t put her together yet. Both puzzles will be great additions to the New York City theme I’ve got going on in my bedroom.

I’m a little nervous that I’m running out of ideas of things to do to celebrate myself this month. I would love some suggestions!

Celebrating Me: Days 7-10

June 7, 2011

This evening I had dinner with some friends at Zupa’s (can you tell how much I love it there?). Then we went to Brigham Young Historic Park for a concert in their Concert in the Park series. The concert we saw was Broadway & Co., a group of local theater performers who sang show tunes. I love show tunes and I had a really good time! Two of my friends were talking and laughing during the whole thing. I still love them dearly, however I am glad that there were two other friends separating me from them. Had I been right next to them I would have been more bothered than I actually was and I may have said something rude. I know it was a free concert, but still, I take Broadway songs very seriously. Anyway, my favorites that they sung were “Nice” from Lucky Stiff and “Shy” from Once Upon a Mattress. I also enjoyed “The Wizard and I” fromΒ  Wicked, though the girl who sang it was clearly ill. But she did her best and we cheered for her like mad!

June 8, 2011

This evening I met my sister Stacey at Red Robin to redeem my free birthday burger. I got the Whiskey River BBQ Burger. It was good, but I feel like they should have also given me my freckled lemonade for free. Just saying.

When we went home we watched the first DVD of the first season of “The Big Bang Theory.” My boss let me borrow the season, and I’m so happy she did! I have many friends who watch and love this show, and I knew it would be a show I would also love, yet I had not ever watched it. So happy to do so now! I’ve discovered that I am totally a female Leonard. It’s just true.

June 9, 2011

For our staff meeting after work today I brought cookies to celebrate all the June birthdays (there are four of them at the center).

After my meeting I watched the second DVD of the first season of “The Big Bang Theory.” Yes!

June 10, 2011

This evening I will be attempting to hit golf balls on a driving range, scarfing Cafe Rio, then watching a movie that has yet to be determined. Tell you more about it later!

Celebrating Me: Days 3-6

Sorry to keep you waiting so long but, gosh, it’s just been so much fun to celebrate! Here’s what’s been going on:

The "spread"

June 3, 2011

Today was the actual anniversary of my birth, so today was my pirate party (courtesy mostly of Ike and Auds). I decorated my apartment, got the food, and my sister made truffles and cake. Most of the food were snack items (such as Pirate Booty and Marshmallow Matey’s) but the main food I got from Zupas. Yum! It was a fun evening of conversing, eating, and playing games. Pirates of the Caribbean Life was a crowd pleaser. Everyone loved the food and treats. And I had a swashbuckling good time πŸ˜‰

June 4, 2011

Birthday banner

Today I got my hair done. Normally I go to Supercuts or some other random place to get my hair cut and buy a dye in a box and have my mom apply it for me. But recently I found the best hairdresser ever! My friend Paige did such a great job on my hair in March – both the cut and the color. I’d never gotten so many compliments on my hair before. So I decided this month was a good time to go back. It was so nice to just sit in a chair for 2 hours and do nothing. Ahh!

Captain Jack Sparrow came to the party

June 5, 2011

Today a friend of mine named Sara gave me a birthday gift. (Not my first gift – my mom bought me a print of Van Gogh’s “Cafe Terrace at Night”, but she gave it to me early so I forgot to mention it…) This wonderful friend of mine works at a fabulous local theater – The Hale Centre Theatre – and got me two tickets that are good for ANY show on ANY day! So excited about that!

Making a wish

Tonight my sister and I had dinner with my parents and watched a movie. This really isn’t that different from any other Sunday night, except I got to pick the dinner, the movie, and dessert. Dinner was roast and potatoes and carrots, the movie was “Mother Goose Rock N Rhyme” (super silly and fun!), and dessert was lemon bars. Then I went to bed early, and it felt like I had slept in the next morning πŸ™‚

Finally blew out all 32 candles

June 6, 2011

Today the ladies at work and I went to Gourmandise Bakery for lunch to celebrate the summer birthday girls, of which I was one – of course! I had a yummy turkey avocado sandwich and strawberry poppy seed salad. I already know what tomorrow’s celebration will bring – but you’ll have to wait to find out!

Celebrating Me, Days 1 and 2

So, I’m taking the month of June off from the Escape Adulthood Challenges. This month I will be annihilating Adultitis by celebrating myself every single day. For, you see, my birthday is tomorrow and I just don’t think celebrating one day is going to do it this year. Nope. Not a chance. So I’m going to consider every day as my birthday during the month I was born. I have no doubt that this month 32 years ago brought the utmost joy to my mother – a joy that nothing has surpassed since. And now I’m going to give myself the same joy.

What inspired me to do this? Kim and Jason, of course! A few weeks back, Kim blogged about birthdays – how and why to make them more memorable. It got me thinking… I’ll be officially 32 tomorrow (I’ve been saying I’m 32 since March. I don’t know why I do that, but I do it every year. I guess it helps me get used to being 1 year older…) and I didn’t know how to celebrate. My closest friends live out of state, and it’s always been difficult for me to find a way to make a memory with people that I haven’t made memories with before. Where do I begin?

I decided to throw myself a party and invite people I know and like, and people I’m beginning to know and like. It was just going to be a party – until I visited my best pal Isaac last weekend. We exchanged birthday gifts while I was there, and part of their gifts to me was pirate party decor: a “happy birthday” sign, a ship centerpiece, pirate noisemakers, and even theme music. So my party turned into a pirate festivity! I’ve spent much of this evening preparing for the party, and I’ll tell you all about it on Saturday!

But here’s what I’ve done to celebrate me so far:

June 1, 2011

I took a nap. A 2 hour nap. It was lovely! I shut out the world and relaxed. Ahhh!

The Sweet Tooth Fairy Cupcakes

June 2, 2011

I went to the Sweet Tooth Fairy and got 2 dozen cupcakes to share with my co-workers. When you order a dozen, they really give you a baker’s dozen. Surprise! So fun, and I got one of each kind! Of course, halfway to work I thought to myself “Self, there are only 6 teachers, 5 assistants, 1 director and 1 you. You only needed one baker’s dozen.” Oh, well. More for me! (And my family and guests tomorrow night.) Many of the teachers hadn’t had cupcakes from the Sweet Tooth Fairy before and were amazed! One teacher said “We opened the box and angels began to sing!” Another said “I had the peanut butter cup one. Best cupcake I’ve ever had! Thank you for being born.” And while I was trying to help a teacher plan her curriculum, she said “Wait, I’m having a moment with my cupcake.”
